Two weeks ago, I asked a question: is this man a terrorist? I was referring to Father Stan Swamy, the priest who at 84 has been arrested in the Bhima Koregaon case under UAPA and accused of being part of a Maoist group based on very flimsy evidence. This week, I ask another question: who will compensate these three young Indian citizens for the 13 months they’ve spent in jail, accused again under the UAPA for their role in the anti-CAA protests that were seen to lead riots in Delhi last February. I don’t think you need to be introduced to Natasha Narwal, Devangana Kalita and Asif Tanha, two from JNU and one from Jamia: their faces are plastered all over the newspapers and tv channels after the Delhi high court granted them bail this week. But it isn’t just an ordinary bail order; this was a scathing indictment of the Delhi police, the union home ministry that the police reports to, and our criminal justice system.

This weekend marks one year since the death of actor Sushant Singh Rajput.. one year since a large section of the media and viewers were obsessed with a single question: was Sushant murdered or did he commit suicide? Reams of newsprint and certainly hours of tv time was used up to engage in a tabloidish drama that frankly was eventually a little nauseating.

27 years ago, I moved to Delhi from Mumbai.. 1994 it was.. the previous 18 months covering the Mumbai riots and blasts had scared me and I wanted to move out of the city.. I also wanted a larger canvas as a political reporter.. so Delhi it was.. from a professional and personal point of view, I haven’t regretted the move.

A few days ago, a well known politician sent me a whatsapp message: ‘are you seeing the pictures at the Kumbh Mela in Hardwar, no masks, no social distancing, I mean isn’t it insane what’s going on!’ I promptly replied in agreement and asked the neta, “why don’t you come on my show and speak up!’. The politician replied with a ‘smiley’ image and said, “I’d love to, but you know how it is!” I felt like replying, “no, I don’t know how it is!”.. but actually I do know how it is.
